Biofeedback

January 29th, 2010

With a nearly 70 percent or better success rate of clinical improvement, biofeedback may be considered effective in the amelioration or reduction of symptoms such as headache, irritable bowel disease, and hypertension with measurable outcomes. This cost- effective modality is the treatment of choice in many instances where the client is partnered with the health care provider in the health restoration process.

Biofeedback can be used in conjunction with other behavioral and stress management techniques, such as visualization, cognitive restructuring, and autogenic training. It is a learning technique that allows the client to become as responsible for his or her health as the therapist, empowering the client to participate equally with the therapist in the planning and implementation of a therapeutic program.

Individual experience can be thought of as events that elicit physical, emotional, and mental responses that are stored in the body-mind. Biofeedback is the process of receiving and using feedback about responses to events to correct problems. It is used to help clients access their own healing potential with self-regulatory skill acquisition. Many different biological processes can be harnessed to provide feedback for learning. These include temperature, heart rate, and electrical muscle activity.

Biofeedback is one of the most widely used and accepted alternative therapies. It can be used to treat a variety of problems, including headaches and other pain conditions, muscle tone irregularities, and anxiety.

Answering Your Biofeedback Questions

January 29th, 2010

People want to be healthy in general. Many people are turning to alternative medicine practices in order to attain a level of health they desire. Biofeedback is one of these alternative medicine practices that have garnered a lot of interest.

It has experienced a revival in recent years. It was first invented in the 1960’s but lost interest as more developments in medicine were introduced. Nowadays people are tired of taking a pill or a powder in order to feel better.

They want a natural way to help their bodies become healthier and biofeedback is providing an answer to the problem of not feeling good. There are many reasons why biofeedback is used and many people are reporting that it does work and will continue to use biofeedback as a way to fight a plethora of medical conditions. But do you know what biofeedback is used for or even what it is? You are in luck because this article will provide you with some of the answers.

What is biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a way to use the body’s signals to improve your own health. You have seen it used countless times in a physician’s office when they monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and even your muscle tenseness.

Going on those results from the machinery, your treatment plan is put into action. If you have ever stepped on a scale at home and measured your weight you have used a biofeedback machine. You see the weight and then take actions based on what you have seen such as losing weight or subconsciously registering that you need to gain weight by eating more.

What are the origins of biofeedback?

It began in the middle of the 20th century with a psychologist and neuroscientist named Neal Miller. He was working and studying at Yale when he discovered that rats would respond to electric signals in the brain.

He would stimulate their pleasure centers and in turn conditioned the rats to control their own physiological and physical reactions such as heartbeat, anxiety and muscle tenseness. Other researchers later took this information and began applying it to patients as a way to monitor illness and stress level. They found that if certain areas were studied the patients would unconsciously make the changes they need to heart rate, breathing and stress.

What does efficacy mean?

Efficacy in relation to the medical field means that a result of a given test is deemed acceptable meaning that it does work as well as any other method currently being used to treat a patient. When it is used during a trial to study the effects it refers to the effectiveness of the given trail in comparison to real world applications.

How is biofeedback used in art?

In art biofeedback is used through measuring an audience’s reaction to visual art work. When a pleasurable level is reached where the audience is relaxed and their muscles are not tense, the music of the pieces is changed to mimic that exact wavelengths being monitored by the machines.

Take Fioricet to Relieve Your Headache

January 29th, 2010

Fioricet is a brand name of a drug made from a mixture of butalbital, acetaminophen, and Caffeine. I have found it useful in the treatment of headaches arising due to tensions and muscle contractions. You can also use it for the treatment of migraines and other pain connected ailments. However, note that Fioricet is not entirely labeled as a pain reliever.

I was only able to obtain the medication with a doctor’s prescription. If you often suffer from constant headaches, then talk to your doctor to find out if Fioricet is a good option in controlling and treating your recurring headaches. The recommended dosage that I was required to take as an adult is 1-2 tablets after every four hours and I was not to surpass six tablets in a day.

Acetaminophen is a well-recognized and accepted pain reliever that you can obtain over the counter. Acetaminophen is the active element in several of the pain relievers including Tylenol, as well as in cough and cold medications. Since Acetaminophen is available in many of the common drugs, you should be aware of the constituents of the medication to avoid overdosing.

Caffeine is also present in many of the over the counter drugs as well as in many foods and beverages such as tea, coffee and cola. Caffeine is used in Fioricet to enhance acetaminophens effectiveness. When you are under the Fioricet medication, avoid substances containing caffeine to avoid overdose and caffeine intoxication or nervousness.

Butalbital is a part of the barbiturate drugs class. It is sedative in nature and used in Fioricet to relax the muscles. I was able to relieve headaches associated with muscle tension as well. Barbiturate can be habitual; therefore, you should take care when using Fioricet to prevent dependency to the drug. Fioricet is only taken as prescribed by a Doctor and you should not exceed the indicated dosage. If you have a history of dependency to drugs you should not be prescribed Fioricet.

You may suffer certain side effects from the drug such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains, nervousness, dizziness, tremors, nervousness, anxiety, and shortness of breath, lightheadedness or drowsiness. Several of these indications are because of overuse of the medication, dependency or withdrawal. You need to report to the Doctor immediately in case you display these symptoms. Severe side effects can be an indication of Fioricet overdose and can be fatal.

Therefore, if you think that you have overdosed Fioricet seek immediate medical help. It could necessitate that you come off Fioricet by slowly decreasing doses to prevent negative withdrawal side effects. This point should be discussed with your Doctor before you stop Fioricet using.
